Palm TreesExploring Gainesville

Gainesville, the county seat of Alachua County has a population of 98,000 citizens. The county is approaching 210,000 residents. Tucked into the northern region of the sunshine state, midway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf Coast, Gainesville's newcomers are easily enchanted by azure skies and a seemingly omnipresent sun. Those who yearn for a life of relaxation and outdoor fun will find our climate ideal.

Beachcombers flocking to the sun drenched climate can visit beaches within a 90 minute drive to either coast. Glistening springs, lakes, nature trails, and campgrounds abound this part of the country. A state preserve and wildlife sanctuary is located just three miles from the heart of Gainesville.

Climate is not the only appeal of Gainesville. Home of the University of Florida since 1906, Gainesville provides both students and residents an exciting and diversified intellectual atmosphere. An array of annual festivals and gala events, local theaters and art galleries provide year round cultural activities.

Economy

Through the years, education has played a major role in the economic development of the community. The University of Florida, along with government agencies, is the largest employer in Alachua County. Health care is a strong second industry serving all of North Central Florida and beyond. Other economic influences include high tech research, environmental engineering, and agriculture.

Climate

While the average temperature in Alachua County is 70 degrees, those who enjoy the changing seasons will feel at home in Gainesville. Breezes from the Gulf produce relatively mild, dry winters and warm days with cool nights during the summer months. The average rainfall in the county is 51.5 inches.
